Jen comes along and places a $15 Maximum Bid for the camera.
Here's how automatic bidding comes into play:
Your budget (or maximum bid) of $25 is higher than Jen's bid. At this point, a bid of $16, equal to Jen's $15 bid plus the lowest incremental bid of $1, is placed automatically for you. The current price for the camera is updated to $16. | |
Note: Automatic bidding gives you the advantage of bidding for an item at the lowest possible price set by you. The current price is usually the second highest bid price plus the lowest bid increment added to it.
In other words, automatic bidding raises the current price as little as possible while staying within your budget, and provides you with a better chance of winning the auction.
Jen's bid is lower than your budget of $25, so she will see a message stating "You have been outbid." Jen cannot see your maximum bid of $25, but since she does not want to pay more than $15 for the camera she decides not to re-bid.
